The Encapsulation Technologist/Operations Encapsulation Specialist is a key member of the NA Flavor Industrialization & Process Innovation Team within Operations. They are responsible for the review, development & improvement of pilot plant process transfer, scale-up and production activities, specific to encapsulation technologies (SD,SBD, Evostar, Evoglass, etc). Is primarily involved in process development for particle design and morphology, extrusion, spray drying, and agglomeration of encapsulated flavors involving pilot and manufacturing process equipment. The colleague will partner closely with production to review and optimize existing formulas and processes and also with ASF&T on new development and technology improvements. Essential Functions: A. ■ Establishes expert knowledge and technical expertise in running and troubleshooting powder technologies, spray-drying and the flavor extrusion processes. ■ Plans and executes pilot plant trials and corresponding data analysis ■ Supports Operations Pilot Plant in the development of Evoglass prototypes for customer presentation and sample submission, supports all related areas in the developing and implementing new business and maintaining the quality for existing business ■ Establishes simple analytical methodology and procedures for existing and new encapsulations ■ Assists internal and external customers in solving product and production related non-compliance. ■ Provides accessible technical expertise to manufacturing personnel. ■ Performs a critical review of existing product pallet to identify opportunities for optimization and consistent quality performance. ■ Develops and maintains a comprehensive data base of product attributes, physical characteristics and processing parameters. B. ■ Supports transfer of new encapsulation products and technologies into manufacturing. ■ Works directly with internal and external customers in product development, troubleshooting and finding technical solutions for extrusion, spray drying and agglomeration. ■ Recommends change of processing parameters and mixing instructions, when it will result in improvements regarding production. ■ Interacts with Quality Control on setting up technical specifications. ■ Tracks all experiments for future data collection and exchange of information with supervisor and regional/global colleagues. ■ Supports the global expert teams in implementing new dry and liquid encapsulation technologies ■ As project leader, preparation of research results and reporting will be required for this position C. ■ Trains Business Unit Applications personnel in the correct application techniques for new technologies ■ Seeks continuous renovation of existing Symrise Encapsulation Technology platform via technology scouting. ■ Supervises and trains production and pilot plant personnel ■ Seeks continuous improvement of existing procedures and methods ■ Operates the Pilot Extruder and MS400 Trial Order Spray Dryer as required.
To qualify, the applicant needs sound knowledge of pilot plant technologies, ingredient expertise specific to encapsulation along with strong interpersonal, communication, problem-solving, & troubleshooting skills. Must be able to work independently. An M.S. in food science and/or engineering or a B.S. in Food Science and/or Engineering and 2-4 years of experience in a relevant field. Skills & Abilities: ■ The Encapsulation Technologist/Operations Encapsulation Specialist is expected to explore new areas of ingredient and process technology to bring the Symrise Encapsulation technology platforms to the next level. It is required to run routine jobs in most cases, but also use a high level of technical creativity in problem solving & troubleshooting activities. A distinct level of creativity will give the individual the freedom to explore an out-of-the-box approach to problem solving. Sound knowledge of extrusion and spray drying technologies and processing is required. It is necessary to be able to represent oneself, work, and the company in a professional and technical manner to internal and external customers. ■ Occasional domestic travel to other Symrise Production Facilities in NA or to the facilities of equipment manufacturers, toll-manufacturers or customers may be required. International travel to Holzminden may be required. ■ Ability to troubleshoot in a production or pilot plant environment. ■ Proficiency in SAP, MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint for reporting and Lotus Notes.
